A Solihull graduate, now half way through the bespoke Barratt Homes ASPIRE programme, has gleaned an abundance of knowledge from the West Midlands homebuilder and hopes to gain long lasting relationships in the industry.
Tom Green (25) joined the developer’s programme, based at Barratt Homes West Midlands’ Head Office, after finishing university after being attracted to the scheme’s format of rotations in all departments of the industry.
Tom said: “When doing my research, I realised that the scheme allowed you rotate around all the departments spending eight weeks in each, giving enough time to really get stuck in on different projects and work with different people.
“Whilst I am far from what would be classed as the ‘finished product’, I am able to learn on the job and have the support from people in the team who are always there to help out when I need to ask them questions. I also enjoy the projects that I am able to get involved in as a graduate.
“I am co-leading a team that is setting up a virtual work experience called ‘Building Beginnings’, a chance to give school leavers an insight into construction, particularly into some of the apprentice programmes that are offered.”
Those who take part in the graduate programme with the developer do six two-month placements on rotation, designed to give an all-round insight into the business.
Year two is a chance for the graduates to specialise in their chosen area. The projects are longer and the challenges are greater, the experience more focused and intense.
The programme helps those involved to develop ideas, focus on leadership and project management skills to help them make an impact right away.
Tom hopes to continue to work for the five star homebuilder and gain a full knowledge of the industry.
He continued: “Only being half way through my rotations I am looking forward to getting a more holistic picture of what we do as a business, and appreciate what my colleagues in other departments do and how.
“In the long-term I see myself as a Technical Manager, someone who is involved in numerous sites and a person that people can rely on and someone who has a wide knowledge base. To get there, I see my short-term future working with some of the best people that Barratt has, learning and developing myself to constantly improve.”
The ASPIRE scheme is challenging but aims to help graduates achieve their potential and leave the programme with the leadership skills and technical understanding to be a successful future leader of any business.
