Meet the innovative, enthusiastic and creative Teacher, who teaches pupils throughout the East Midlands and even as far as London and Wales!
Like any new year it’s a golden opportunity for a fresh start, to try out something new and focus on future goals without looking back on the past.
For one former head teacher, the beginning of 2020 was not only a new year and a new decade, but also a motivational turning point to implement positive and healthier changes in her life.
Christina Saccoh, from Bingham Nottinghamshire, is a highly successful teacher specialising in English and SEN. Over the last 18 years, she’s gained a headship, the first being only four years after qualifying, been an accomplished speaker motivating and raising the aspirations of students as well as women in business and to round it off, set up her own behavioural school from scratch. The latter enabled her to support the work of one of Prince Harry’s Nottingham projects to improve opportunities to encourage young people, involved in crime, back into education.
A few years ago, a serious illness got the better of her and she had no choice but to scale back her hours. However, as a single mum she needed to find a way to supplement her income so, began tutoring English to local primary and secondary kids, from home. This side line later became her company The Tutor Boss. Eventually as Christina became better, she returned to fulltime teaching but kept the tutoring on the back burner as a backup business. By now though word had got around about her “quirky and engaging” teaching techniques, and proven success with pupil after pupil, that she found an increasing demand from parents wanting their children under her wing. So, she continued tutoring adding in other core subjects to her offering including Maths, History, Business Studies, Biology, PE and BTEC Level Sport and Sport Science.
Christina says “I’m quite well known in my local community for being the teacher that gets results, by teaching outside of the box, with my innovative ways. I like to encourage students to think beyond what’s in front of their faces as well as building confidence, these skills are key to unlocking a child’s potential and just some of the many reasons my students do so well academically. As pupil numbers increased, I began to enjoy this form of teaching more and more plus the new work life balance fitted in well with family life. So, a few months into 2020 I thought right I’m going for it! then Lockdown happened and I had to shield. It hit me like a ton of bricks and forced me to focus full time on something that had been a side hustle”.
“Lockdown meant schools and colleges suddenly closed and many parents and students, particularly those sitting A Level’s and GCSE’s this year and next, were left wondering, some even panicking, how on earth they were going to continue with their studies and even though schools were sending work through, it wasn’t the same quantity and quality across the board. So, with the wonders of the internet and I had to learn fast, I turned my weekly classes online using Zoom and Facebook Live. From then on, and again by word of mouth this time particularly from many of my students, pupil count increased dramatically and I’ve literally not looked back”, she added.
The last few months has seen Christina embrace some online learning of her own as she signed up to Amazon’s small business e-learner programme as well as delving into the world of social media to reach new people. This month she took the plunge and quit her fulltime teaching job to concentrate and develop The Tutor Boss and remarkably at the same time, she was approached and interviewed by Amazon as a great example of someone successfully benefiting from the lockdown boom in online learning and business success. Her inspirational story was subsequently featured on Amazon’s Business Platform E-nation.
So, what lies ahead now for The Tutor Boss?
“2021 has been non-stop, education is at the forefront of every ones minds, we are in a position where everyone is playing “catch-up”. I have already taken on a new recruit for our primary provision and to filter enquiries more efficiently I’ve just launched The Tutor Boss website (www.thetutorboss.com) which I’m extremely proud of, an online timetable will feature soon so people can dive in and out of classes to suit them. I’m also branching out big time, and although my tutoring will be kept for my larger clients, I’m in the early stages of producing my own eBook and structured and progressive teaching programme that I want to offer out for other tutors. Another huge milestone is I’m recruiting for another “me”!!! Due to demand particularly from exam year students in year 10 and 11, I’m looking for a qualified teacher for secondary, someone who’s a bit of a ‘bright spark’, someone with a flair for education, not just ‘chalk & talk’. We are not a franchise, we have an exceptional team and extremely high standards and require someone who is as passionate as me in equipping students with confidence and key skills they can use throughout their lives”.
