Headway East Northants (HEN); acquired brain injury support charity, is a charitable organisation based in Irthlingborough, and will benefit greatly from the donation from the leading homebuilder.
The donation was made as part of the Barratt David Wilson Homes Community Fund scheme which has been created to strengthen ties with local communities. Barratt David Wilson Homes donates £1,000 to a local charity or organisation each month which improves the quality of life for those living in the area.
Headway East Northants initially began as a small support group, organised by the loved one of an acquired brain injury (ABI) survivor wanting to connect with other families experiencing similar challenges.
Based on the ground floor of Irthlingborough Library since April 1998, the charity provides specialist support to adults with ABI, incurred via many causes, including stroke, aneurysm, haemorrhage, accident and assault.
Claire Phillips, Centre Manager at Headway East Northants, said: “It was an amazing surprise to get a phone call saying we’d been chosen by Barratt Northampton to receive such a phenomenal donation.
“As it was towards the end of December, it really was the ultimate Christmas present for us.”
The generous donation will be used to support the charity’s client counselling service.
Introduced in November 2018, this service is invaluable, not only to the clients of Headway East Northants, but also to their families and loved ones, who are also managing the enormous life changes brought about by acquired brain injury.
An acquired brain injury can turn a family’s life upside down in a moment. Families find themselves trying to adapt to so many challenges; from personality changes in their loved one, (fatigue, managing increased physical needs, and loss of income, on top of keeping day-to-day life ticking over.
Claire added: “Our charity’s aim is to improve the quality of life for our service users, enabling them to live the richest and most fulfilling life they possibly can.
“This fantastic donation makes such a positive difference, enabling us to continue and progress our services for those living with the daily, fluctuating challenges of an acquired brain injury.
“The Barratt David Wilson Homes Community Fund is such a terrific asset for small charities such as Headway East Northants.”
Headway East Northants activity centre, open Monday to Friday 10am-4pm, offers a range of stimulating, purposeful activities.
The charity provides a person-centered service that understands the complexities of the hidden disability and the problems that may arise with cognition, memory, communication and behaviour. The centre has a professional, friendly and non-judgmental environment where ABI survivors can come together for specialist support and friendship.
Andrew Swindell, Managing Director at Barratt Homes Northampton, said: “We’re delighted to have been able to support Headway East Northants through the community fund and wish them all the best.
“As the country’s largest homebuilder, we are committed to creating a positive legacy. We want to lead the industry, not just in the quality of the homes and developments we build, but also in our work with charities and good causes throughout the UK.”
