Council chiefs are set to approve a masterplan to overhaul Oldham town centre at a cabinet meeting next week. The Monday, November 18 meeting will give the green light to a 15-year partnership with developers Muse to introduce 2,000 new homes, offices and businesses to Oldham.
The plans, designed to tackle the borough’s housing crisis and boost local business footfall, involve developing council-owned land in key areas across the town centre. These include Mumps, the Civic Centre and the Queen Elizabeth Hall, the old leisure centre, and the demolished Magistrates Court.
All of these sites are ‘brownfield’, meaning they have been previously built on, unlike greenfield land. Most of the areas will be transformed into L-shaped residential blocks surrounding communal parks, with nearby commercial space for amenities such as
