Pupils from St Mary’s C of E Primary School in Milton Keynes are joining thousands of children across the UK to take part in International Walk to School Month, with help from local homebuilder Barratt Homes South Midlands.
The school as teamed up with the developer, which has supported the campaign by donating hi-visibility vests for pupils to wear on their way to and from school during October, which is Walk to School Month, and throughout the rest of the year.
Despite the average distance to a pupil’s primary school being one mile, more than half of school children do not walk to school regularly, with an enormous 52 per cent driven to school in cars or by other means (National Travel Survey 2016).
Amanda Dicks, Head Teacher at St Mary’s C of E Primary School, said: “We think walking to school is important and encourage as many of our pupils as possible to walk to school safely. It is good to see a developer support such an important initiative and we really appreciate the donation of these vests from Barratt Homes.”
Walking to school benefits children and their parents by increasing exercise and saving money on fuel, and it can even increase social interaction with other families who choose to walk to school and prevent stress by not driving during rush hour.
Jason Hearn, Sales Director at Barratt Homes South Midlands, said: “Our development Eagles’ Rest is located near to St Mary’s C of E Primary School, so as families move into their new homes it is important for us to support International Walk to School month and encourage families to stay safe while walking to and from school.
“By offering pupils a helping hand and donating hi-visibility vests they should be encouraged to walk to school and can stay safe as the dark nights draw in.”
