ASSISTANT SITE MANAGER IS PAVING THE WAY FOR WOMEN IN CONSTRUCTION

Posted on March 27, 2020 Comments Off on ASSISTANT SITE MANAGER IS PAVING THE WAY FOR WOMEN IN CONSTRUCTION

An Assistant Site Manager for Barratt Homes in Nottinghamshire has shed some light on being a woman in the construction industry.

Zoe Burns (25) is based at the five star housebuilder’s Romans’ Quarter development in Bingham and has offered an insight into the many roles available in construction.

She said: “The best thing about working on site is the variety in my workload. Come rain, shine, wind or hail I am working outside in the open air.

“For women starting out in the industry, it’s important to be proud of yourself because you are paving the way for future generations.”

Originally from Oxford but now living in Nottingham, Zoe has always had an interest in construction and architecture and particularly enjoyed watching Grand Designs.

Her first role in construction was with a local developer, which specialised in small, high-end traditional houses and barn conversions across Somerset.

She’s now enjoying a role onsite with Barratt Homes, contributing to a growing community in Bingham.

Zoe continued: “From working in the industry I have discovered many different job roles that young women might not be aware of.

“I’ve never received any additional assistance or preferential treatment from Barratt Homes because I’m female. I’ve been treated exactly the same as men in my position which is exactly how things should be – this is true gender equality.”

With a number of female employees already in a range of roles across the company, Barratt Homes wants to remind women from all skill sets of the different roles available and is encouraging them to put their experience to the industry.

Chris Southgate, Managing Director at Barratt Homes North Midlands, said: “We’re very thankful to have Zoe in our team as she’s a great advocate for women in construction.

“As a leading housebuilder, we strive to remove the barrier of stereotypes and ensure there are equal opportunities for both men and women to progress in the trade.”

Some roles within the industry include:

Based out on site – Electricians, Plasterers, Engineers, Fork-lift Driver, Scaffolders, Bricklayers, Site Manager, Contracts Manager

Based at Head Office – Architectural Technician, Surveyors, Land and Planning Managers, Estimator, Buyer, Finance Administrator.
