A Shropshire resident has transformed her new David Wilson home into the perfect mum sanctuary by creating a contemporary garden room at Drayton Meadows in Market Drayton.
Lynne Godfrey (49) moved into the three bedroom home with her husband Richard (45), and two daughters, Samantha (15), and Francesca (9). The family opted for the Fairway style property after the modern design and spacious garden ticked all the boxes, and Lynne has been putting her stamp on their new home ever since.
Lynne, a Kitchen Assistant, said: “I enjoy designing and being creative, especially in our new garden. The garden was designed based on things I knew I wanted to include.
“The first was two swings that my husband built, and are made in such a way so that when they’re no longer needed by the girls, the wooden arch and trellis will make a pretty walkway covered with jasmine climbers.”
The second was what Lynne and her family have now nicknamed her ‘She Shed’. Built by herself and telecommunications engineer, Richard, Lynne’s garden room was the ideal place for her to entertain friends and relax after a long day.
Lynne continued: “We painted a wooden gazebo, fitted it with some Perspex for extra shelter, and filled it with upcycled furniture and candles for a feeling of luxury. There is a rattan couch in the corner, and I created some shelves out of scaffolding and a hand drawn sign with a sharpie pen for a bit of fun.”
Taking on the task of designing and decorating the family’s new home, Lynne is more than aware of how intimidating it can be to come up with ideas on how to decorate a home. She said: “I find that inspiration comes from magazines, Pinterest, show homes, and just pure instinct!
“In the future I want to introduce some feature walls using fashionable wallpaper, or a nice colour of paint, but I’ve learned over the years that you need to 100% love your decision before committing.”
“I like to buy my furniture locally because it’s important to support local businesses so that they can continue, but I find that when you move into a new home you don’t always have the necessary funds to furnish it from scratch.”
In giving advice on how homebuyers can embrace their own blank canvas of a new build property, she added: “You might have furniture from your previous home that may or may not fit, and you may have inherited spare items from friends and family that have been donated to help you out. It can be tricky because sometimes you have to live with an arrangement and tweak it by moving things around until they fit perfectly, or upcycle them with a lick of paint.
“Designing your home is a marathon, not a race, and it can take some time before you’re completely happy with how everything looks. Before a complete upheaval, start small and look at accessorising your home around what you already have. My personal favourites are simple designs on trays, mirrors and art on the walls, flowers, and lanterns because they always make a room feel warm and cosy.
“The decoration throughout the house is almost complete, so we might just have to move so that I can do it all again!”
The Godfreys used Help to Buy, as well as David Wilson Homes’ Movemaker scheme to purchase their home. Movemaker is perfect for those that want to take the hassle out of selling their old home, and can be discussed further with a Sales Adviser at a pre-arranged appointment.
Lynne said: “We wanted to stay close to Market Drayton because it has great shops, friendly people, and good schools, and we thought this development was really well laid out and tidy. We had great guidance from the Sales Advisers and Site Manager, and we’re lucky enough to have some friendly neighbours. My parents are planning to move to the development too!”
